Outer Banks Web Cam, Outer Banks

Outer Banks Web CamLatest News Update About Outer Banks Web Cam: The web cam project and sites are set-up and maintained by? Director of Emergency Management, Sandy Sanderson. The project serves as a real-time means to assist the NCDOT and Dare County Emergency Management during storms by using streaming video. It also provides visual information to the public via the internet. The view on the website is not streaming video but is a still shot continually updated every 15 seconds so that more users may access this feature at the same time.

The purpose of the Mirlo Beach camera is to film the road at what is commonly called S-curves, a "hot spot" on NC Highway 12 where overwash is frequent during storms. Dare County Emergency Management purchased the Mirlo Beach camera and controls the direction of the view remotely from Manteo.

A second camera is available in the village of Hatteras which is operated from the water tower. This camera will be directed toward the vulnerable area of NC Highway 12 where a breech was carved in September of 2003. Souce
