Twitter Launches ¡®Promoted Accounts¡¯ To Make Money

Twitter Launched another scheme to Exploit its 200 million users for advertising purposes. In addition, it took some baby steps toward smoothing relations between itself and third-party developers. This latest revenue generator is called Promoted Accounts. It was announced last week by then-COO Dick Costolo at the IAB Mixx conference in New York City. Costolo was named CEO of the company today, as his predecessor, Evan Williams, announced he was stepping down to focus all his energies on product development.

Promoted Accounts allows advertisers to buy spots in the "Who To Follow" column placed beside a user's tweet stream. The feature is designed to help users discover other users with similar interests. For advertisers, it would serve as a way to pump up their following.

To make the feature more palatable to members, the same algorithm that's used to suggest members a user should follow will also be used to determine if a promoted account should appear in the list. Carolyn Penner explained the process this way today at Twitter's company blog:

"Promoted Accounts are suggested based on a user's public list of whom they follow. When an advertiser promotes an account, Twitter's algorithm looks at that account's followers and determines other accounts that those users tend to follow. If a user follows some of those accounts, but not the advertiser's account, then Twitter may recommend the advertiser's Promoted Account to that user. For example, a lot of people who follow several gaming-related accounts also follow @xbox. If someone follows gaming-related accounts, but not @xbox, Twitter may recommend @xbox to that person."

Twitter accounts listed in the Who To Follow section can be hidden by clicking a box on the item. Theoretically, the same will be true for Promoted Accounts appearing in the area.

Promoted Accounts will also be appearing in the "Suggestions for You" area on the right side of a user's Twitter home page.

Users shouldn't worry about being overwhelmed by Promoted Accounts at this stage of the game. Penner explained that the program is in the testing phase and only a handful of companies will be initially participating in it.

In addition to the Promoted Accounts announcement, Twitter revealed that it has begun testing syndication of its Promoted Products program with some third-party developers, such as HootSuite. Under the scheme, the third-party partners will share in the revenues created by Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends when they promote those products at their sites.

The move appears to be calculated to create some stability for developers of Twitter applications, who have seen early stage investment for their ideas dip 50 percent in the last year.

Latest News Update About Good Phrases For Composition Writing: If I were to ask you to write about your favorite kitchen appliance, your brain would begin working right away. In fact, you're probably picturing your favorite appliance in your mind's eye right now.

Your mind would think of all the ways you like to use that appliance and how it makes your life easier and what kinds of things you have produced with it, and maybe you would mentally compare it to other appliances you have tried.

Your brain would compile all those thoughts and images, and across your mind would flash a phrase or a sentence, then more phrases and more sentences. Then, and only then, would your fingers move to record what you have composed in your head. You would think some more, then write a little; think and write, think and write.

You see, the majority of the work of composition is done in your head. Writing is simply a way of recording what you are thinking.

Charlotte Mason realized that fact and it is reflected in how she taught composition. Here is a summary of what she recommended for each grade level, as well as a few tips to keep in mind.

Composition through the Grades

All Grades

Use spoken narration in all the grades. "Oral composition is the habit of the school from the age of six to eighteen" (Vol. 6, pp. 269, 270). Verbal narration, or telling back in your own words, requires your child to go through the mental work of composition. The difference is that the composition is spoken rather than written. Verbal narration lays the foundation for and provides mental practice in composition.

Grades 1�3

Do mostly oral narration. You can include occasional written narrations, but the majority of the composition work should be oral to give your child plenty of practice in organizing his thoughts. If he does attempt to write all or part of a narration, do not worry too much about mechanics like punctuation and capitalization at this age. And don't worry about direct teaching of composition yet. Encourage his efforts and concentrate on the mental part of composition at this level.

Grades 4�6

Now you can require more written narrations than you did in the lower grades. We all know how much faster the brain can work than the fingers can. At this level, give your child plenty of practice in getting his thoughts recorded on paper, but still don't worry about any direct teaching of composition. As your child shows interest, you can work on some aspects of mechanics or word choice, but approach those aspects one or two points at a time. For example, you might focus on how to do punctuation within dialogue (She said, "Don't forget the comma before the quotation marks."). Once your child has mastered that particular point, work on another one.

Grades 7�9

By this level your child should be writing most of his narrations. You can continue working on improving his mechanics and word choices one or two points at a time, and at this age you can start asking for some of his narrations to be written in poetry form. But still there need be no direct teaching of composition.

Grades 10�12

By these grades your child should have developed his own style of writing, influenced by the many great authors he has read over the years in his CM education. So you can now give him some definite teaching in the art of composition, but not too much, still using the one-or-two-points-at-a-time method. This teaching will be more of an attempt at shaping his individual style, rather than trying to force it into a particular formula. "Having been brought up so far upon stylists the pupils are almost certain to have formed a good style; because they have been thrown into the society of many great minds, they will not make a servile copy of any one but will shape an individual style out of the wealth of material they possess; and because they have matter in abundance and of the best they will not write mere verbiage" (Vol. 6, p. 194).

Tips from Charlotte Mason on Composition

1. Children should write of what they know and care about.

2. Vary the narration questions to cover the four types of composition. The four basic types of composition are narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive. Charlotte worded her narration questions to give children practice in composing all four types. She concentrated on narrative and expository for the younger grades, then added descriptive and persuasive in the older grades. (For more details and some examples, see pages 173 and 174 in Hearing and Reading, Telling and Writing: A Charlotte Mason Language Arts Handbook.)

3. Vary the narration style to include poetry, letters, scripts, dialogue, diary entries, and more. Give your child practice in composing different styles of communications.

Calling it a history-making test, Boeing announced that its airborne laser destroyed a boosting ballistic missile for the first time. The aircraft that fired the lasers is a Boeing Wichita-modified 747-400F aircraft.

It marks the first time a laser weapon has destroyed an in-flight ballistic missile and the first time a system has done it in the missile's boost stage of flight, Boeing said.

"With the successful experiment, the Airborne Laser Testbed has blazed a path for a new generation of high-energy, ultra-precision weaponry," Boeing vice persident Michael Rinn said in a statement.

The laser tracks, engages and destroys missiles as they're in the boost phase of flight.

Flora And Fauna, As I was flicking through the latest Anthropologie catalog, I came across an artful jumble of canvas kicks. I’m sure you can picture it: Staged just so, so as to give off the look that a small flock of carefree indie girls had returned to their summer beach house and ever so casually kicked off their shoes as they dreamily ambled towards shabby chic couches upon which they would drape their necessarily lithe bodies about in various poses of languor.

Ahem.

Anyway, I was curious as to the brand of the shoes and―since Anthro and baby sis Urban Outfitters apparently have a congenital defect that prevents them from listing the names of designers whose work is featured in their very pages―I checked online to see who made them. Upon ascertaining the sneakers were by Superga, I proceeded to hit up trusty Zappos for a wider selection. Out of the webpage sprang some hairy zebra-striped sneaks. (Limited edition, on sale, blahblahblah.) Indeed, they are reminiscent of the Opening Ceremony x Keds collaboration, but I am partial to Superga’s black midsole and overall sturdier look. And, even though nobody puts Baby in a corner/does a light summer trainer like Keds, the more substantial Supergas have the benefit of looking better with both summer and winter outfits. (When one’s bundled from head to toe, it can be mighty tough to pull off flimsy looking shoes.)

Another patterned kick carving out a modicum of mindspace as of late is this floral iteration from the New Balance x Nine West collaboration. My mild aversion to printed Converse loosely extends to all trainers, but I’ll surely make an exception for these ditsy buds on my feet.

Committee Formed For Suggesting Robust TRP Mechanism

On Wednesday, the government constituted a new seven member committee for suggesting a new mechanism to find robust television rating point (TRP). The committee will be headed by FICCI General Secretary Amit Mitra, besides other industry related people like documentary film maker Rajiv Mehrotra, journalist Neeraja Choudhary, D S Mathur (retired Secretary in Government of India), directors of IIM Ahmedabad and Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata) and Joint Secretary (Broadcasting) of I&B Ministry.

The work of the committee would be to, on one hand study the existing system and look for loopholes in the same. On the other, it will be bringing into place an effective mechanism which will be starting a transparent TRP system in India.

The committee is supposed to submit its report within next three months time, an official statement said.

The step has been taken after Minister for Broadcasting, Ambika Soni made first announcement related to TRP and said that a more transparent system is needed.

There have been many criticisms in the industry which say that private agencies are trying to monopolies the TRP system.

Maplesea Forum: Not many players have gotten to MapleStory's level 200 cap; maybe only a couple in Japan, Korea, and SEA, in MapleSEA, level 200 will not be the end of the game's extremely long grind.? In fact, that cap is being removed altogether, or at least being raised up to 999.

For those that play MapleSEA though, it's already old news, as a forum thread containing a newspaper interview in a foreign language was posted on Playpark, Asiasoft's official forum, back on April 25th.

The article, although I'm no good in the language it's posted in, apparently goes on to say that the level 200 cap has been removed, and that there will be special areas and skills for people that are above MapleStory's original level cap, maybe also including the level 200 benefits from kMS as well.

This does bring up one question regarding gMS, however, and that is among the other versions of MapleStory where normal EXP rates are sometimes 1.2 or more times higher than ours in gMS, will Nexon ever do anything that can help ease the pain of the atrocious grind for gMS players, other than the somewhat controversial 2x EXP cards?

Maybe one day, but probably nowhere in the near future for us.

Microsoft Help, BANGALORE, INDIA: NetApp, on Monday announced partnership with Microsoft? to bring enterprise-class data protection services for small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) by leveraging the Microsoft Dynamic Data Center Toolkit for Hosters. Although enterprise-class data protection has historically been too expensive for most small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) to implement themselves, NetApp and Microsoft now enable service providers to offer enterprise-class data protection to their SMB customers.

The Dynamic Data Center Toolkit provides sample code and guidance for building cloud services powered by Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V and the Microsoft System Center Suite.

NetApp is currently the only storage vendor to integrate with the Dynamic Data Center Toolkit, enabling service providers to leverage NetApp's integrated data protection capabilities such as disaster recovery, clustered failover, and backup and recovery.

These solutions would enable service providers to expand their service offerings to accelerate their business, while offering and meeting stringent service-level agreements (SLAs) for their customers. Additionally, NetApp storage efficiency capabilities help service providers reduce their costs―savings that are passed along to SMBs, said a press release.

"SMBs are demanding enterprise-class disaster recovery solutions, and hosting service providers are in a tremendous position to fill that demand as more SMBs move toward hosted IT services," said John Zanni, general manager of Worldwide Hosting for the Communications Sector at Microsoft.

Patrick Rogers, vice president of Solutions and Alliances Marketing, NetApp added that till date small- and medium-size businesses haven't been able to make the investments necessary to enjoy the benefits of robust disk-based data protection.

"Working with Microsoft, we are helping to address this gap by arming regional and local service providers with the ability to deliver cost-effective enterprise-class data protection services to their customers," he said.

To supplement today's announcement, NetApp also unveiled new consulting offerings and design guidance documentation for Microsoft environments, along with new capabilities to help service providers improve their SLAs.

After two and a half years of delays, aerospace giant Boeing will finally push its Dreamliner out of the nest and see if it can fly. The Boeing 787’s first flight today marks a long anticipated turning point for the company, as it tiptoes closer to cashing in on the next-gen plane that airlines have hungered for.

The aircraft will lift off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., at 1 p.m. Eastern time. It’ll then touch down in Boeing Field in Seattle, about 30 miles south.

Boeing announced the 787 Dreamliner in 2004 as the first major plane to take full advantage of lightweight, composite materials. Fuel efficient and capable of carrying 250 passengers over great distances or up to 330 people for shorter flights, the 787 could shave off millions of dollars spent on fuel and upkeep. Airlines loved the idea and ordered 840 Dreamliners, worth about $140 billion.

But several delays gunked up production, including design flaws, a two-month strike, and supply shortages. Today, Boeing has a chance to prove that the wait was worth it.

This first flight “will provide a badly needed perception that the program is on some kind of schedule again,” Richard Aboulafia, aerospace analyst at research firm Teal Group, told Reuters. “But it’s still a long way from the ultimate result.”

Miegakure is a platform game where you explore the fourth dimension to solve puzzles. The Miegakure game is about exploring the consequences of being able to move in four spatial dimensions. It plays like a regular three-dimensional platformer, but at the press of a button one of the dimensions is exchanged withthe fourth dimension, allowing for four-dimensional movement. Think about a two-dimensional character living on a horizontal, flat two-dimensional plane. To this character, height would be a foreign concept. A number of actions we three-dimensional beings take for granted feel like absolute magic to this two-dimensional character.

For example, if there is a wall in the shape of a circle around an object in 2D, it is essentially closed-off, since to reach it one would have to leave the 2D plane. It is also impossible for an outsider to know what is inside.

But us 3D beings can see the object from above, and also simply lift it off the ground to move it outside, essentially teleporting it. Now by analogy a four-dimensional being could perform many similar miracles to us living in only three-dimensions. This game allows you to perform these "miracles."

The games medium makes the mathematical concept of a fourth dimension easier to understand by allowing to experience it first-hand, using trial and error, as opposed to being told about it.

The game is currently in development and the goal is to release it in downloadable form for consoles and PC/Mac. There is no announced date and platform yet. There is no publicly released demo at this point. ?

Ancient Aliens

Ancient Aliens, Stop me if I've ranted about this before. Well, actually, stop reading because you can't stop me. I'm currently watching a program on the History Channel (not to be confused with the History International Channel, which is known around these parts as Hitler & Hauntings TV) about ancient aliens, because, you know, there's a slew of evidence that ALIENS were here leaving behind random tidbits of "advanced" knowledge about super-technical things that humans couldn't have known a few thousand years ago because they were so primitive and unsophisticated and simple.

They don't, of course, call them "primitive" or "unsophisticated" or "simple" anymore. They used to when this particular genre of programming started up but I guess they got enough grief about that to stop being so blatantly insulting. Now they talk all around some tantalizing bits of ancient knowledge and fascinating artifacts that "seem to indicate" and "point to" visitations by aliens. Because what else could it possibly be?

What has sent me over the edge this evening is a segment on some stylized gold figurines that are CLEARLY advanced aircraft because they demonstrate an understanding of aerodynamics. Never mind that these artifacts are quite magnificently and exactingly rendered by the same people who…couldn't have sorted out anything about aerodynamics. I guess the aliens helped with that too.

Anyway, their point is that obviously, until the aliens came along, there wasn't anything around that could demonstrate aerodynamics in action and be in any way instructive to naturally curious human beings.

Today is the first official day of the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. This is where the drooling process begins, where we see what tech items to expect for the year. Aside from a ton of 3D, it seems that there is also a lot of buzz for a very optimistic 2010.

Today, the Consumer Electronics Association released its semi-annual forecast, which predicts that the industry will be raking in the cash this year — to the tune of $165 billion. Part of that enthusiasm is due to this year’s CES turnout.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel and it is the bright light of innovation,” said Gary Shapiro, CEA President and CEO. “We are seeing more innovation at this show than at any show in our history. There are a record number of new exhibitors, more than 330, among the 2,500 companies showcasing the next generation of technology.”

This is awesome news, too. In 2009, the CE industry saw a drop. What industry didn’t? However, it’s nice to see everyone willing to make a fresh start. The CEA’s report says that 2009 saw a 7.8 percent decline in shipment revenues, even though unit volume actually increased 10 percent.

Shapiro says the two hot categories for the year should be smartphones and netbooks. Smartphones should be the king of the CE ring, with $17 billion in sales. Netbooks should do a very decent $14 billion.

“Smartphones and netbooks are primed for strong growth as consumers continue to seek efficient, portable devices,” said Steve Koenig, CEA’s director of industry analysis. “With more consumers seeking content anywhere, anytime, the demand for products facilitating these experiences will drive purchases going forward.”

No 3D? Perish the thought! The hot topic of this year’s show should do some pretty decent sales. The CEA is expecting to see more than 4 million 3D sets in homes by the end of the year. Consumers will also keeping adding Blu-ray as well, which is projected to do $1.4 billion in sales. HDTVs will also continue to sell well. However, price drops should cause revenue to slide to $22 billion.

The CES publishes The U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecast 2005-2010 (January 2010) twice a year, in January and July.

It was only two years ago that a Labour Minister apparently described them as “shits”.? They seem to be taken for granted and have become the forgotten service. Their work in keeping our borders secure – against great odds – deserves to be recognised.? Just as Prison Officers and the Police have received Jubilee medals, so too Immigration Officers have a right to be rewarded for their dedication and commitment to Britain. Qualifying Officers should belatedly receive the Golden Jubilee medal, so as to ensure that they are in line for the next medal awards in 2012. Our Immigration service should be forgotten no longer.

Hurdy Gurdy, This is a disk of songs from 13th century France by the ensemble Sinfonye which is the project of composer and instrumentalist Stevie Wishart. Many of the interweaving vocal lines by the three singers in fact tell differing stories simultaneously, although this effect is lost on those such as myself without the language skills to appreciate it. The first track on the disk, Azeruz, differs from the others in that it is a new composition by Wishart in the spirit of a medieval motet and has the most continual instrumental accompaniment of any of the other tracks. This is attractive enough while straying perilously close to a kind of Enya territory in parts. The disk takes a while to build an authentic medieval atmosphere on the back of this, especially when one might be expecting larger vocal forces in the chant like aspects. But that mood is eventually successfully built and maintained. The hurdy gurdy and fiddle don’t feature on every track, some are acapella, but are very evocative where they are used with the distinctive hurdy gurdy being especially attractive.

Microsoft Windows

Income Tax Slab 09 10, I'm sixteen and I got a job in May 2009. I just recently noticed the woman who manages payroll at my work, for some reason had messed up my social security number on my paycheck.The last two digits weren't what they should've been. She said she'd go change it. What do I do when it comes time to file for my tax retursince she had the wrong SSN on file?

Will I need to call the IRS and try to fix it, or is she supposed to make an amendment with them?

Please help.
