Unisim Student Portal

Unisim Student PortalLatest News Update About Unisim Student Portal: More people are taking life-long learning seriously. In fact, SIM University, or UniSIM, said student enrolment to its courses doubled from about 6,000 to 12,000 within five years. The varsity, which offers working adults degree programmes, saw some 1,400 graduates this year – its biggest batch so far.

Among them was 52-year-old Loh Li Cheng. The human resource practitioner, who has more than 20 years of experience in her profession, pursued a degree in translating languages.

“This Translation and Interpretation course is actually to get myself prepared for a second career, a few years later after I retire from the corporate world,” Mdm Loh said, adding that she hoped to start a language translation service in future.

Mdm Loh also said having a passion for learning pushed her to add more qualifications to the Economics and Statistics degree she already has.

MediaCorp deputy chief executive officer (News, Radio, Print & Interactive) Shaun Seow, who was a keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony, said many working adults shared the same motivations as Mdm Loh in pursuing further education.

He added to thrive in a highly competitive economy, one may need to look beyond just embracing life-long learning.

Mr Seow also said reinvention was key, just as how MediaCorp has reinvented its offerings through the years.

“The free publication, TODAY, may be tabloid-sized, but it’s not like the tabloids you see in other metropolises associated with lurid, vulgar sensationalism.

“We have offered readers a serious alternative, gaining popularity when most broadsheets are stagnating or declining. Now that’s reinvention for you, even for the oldest media form,” he said.

Mr Seow also advised graduates to take inspiration from a certain pop icon.

“If there’s a person who best embodies reinvention in this world, I would say it’s Madonna, the singer.

“Remember her from the 1980s, writhing on the floor singing ‘Like a Virgin’? We recently saw her as a very fit 50 year old singing ’4 minutes’ with Justin Timberlake. He, for the record, was only three years old when she had her first Number 1 single.

“She’s still on top of her game three decades on, and numerous reincarnations later. So, think Madonna, and you’ll find the road to realising your goals a lot smoother,” Mr Seow said.

UniSIM, which is into its fifth year, is adding more programmes into its curriculum.

These include courses in Gerontology, Chinese Communication and Human Capital Management which will begin next year.

The varsity is also expanding its campus grounds to accommodate more students in future.
