Frank Thomas : The White Sox on Friday said it will retire Frank Thomas, No. 35, as the baseball officially announced his retirement earlier in the U.S. Cellular Field.
Thomas will be uniform number retired during a ceremony on the field, “Frank Thomas said,” Aug. 29, when they host the New York Yankees at 1:05 pm
“I am very proud and honor,” Thomas said the presence of a number of retirees. “If it was up to me I have played every year in my career here in Chicago, but I understand professional sports, and the elderly, men, men move, but this is the place you always wanted to be, and to have this number of retirees here , it is a great honor. ”
Thomas, who last played for the White Sox in 2005 before finishing in Toronto and Auckland with 521 career home runs, did not play last season. At the age of 41, he realized his retirement announcement has been “for a long time to come.”
“I had to get baseball out of my system before this announcement,” Thomas said.
“I’m at peace with it. I had one heck of a career, and proud of it. It was one hell of a ride.”
Thomas No. 35 to become the 10th number retired from the common White Sox, joining No. 2 (Indigo Fox), No. 3 (Harold Baines), No. 4 (Luke Appling), No. 9 (Minnie Minoso), No. 11 (Luis Aparicio, currently the United United retirement for the season 2010), and No. 16 (Ted Lyon), No. 19 (Billy Pierce), No. 42 (Jackie Robinson) and No. 72 (Carlton Fisk).
“Every person who enjoyed the performance of Frank Thomas during his career sticking with the White Sox quickly realized we were watching one of the greatest players to attack each time, the player destined to rewrite the club record books and said,” Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “When your career to an end, and your body of work is against such a tendency Hall Fmrs Ott, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, and you really rank among the kings of baseball.
“I think it is only a matter of time until it receives the Frank game the greatest honor in Cooperstown is no doubt that he deserves the honor of being recognized among the elite players of the White Sox in this election in its history, as his number (35) retired.”
